What to Look for In a Leather Heavy Bag
A leather heavy bag is specially designed to standup to years of abuse; it also helps a boxer perfect their punch. It is designed to closely replicate the response that a gloved fist will have on a human body.
Although boxing gyms tend to have a wide range of different boxing bags available to members, most have at least one leather heavy bag. Most bags weigh between forty and one hundred pounds. The weight of the bag should all depend on your size and strength.
For example, a 170 lb male with a strong punch should work on a seventy pound punching bag, while a professional boxer of the same weight would need a one-hundred pound bag. A lightweight boxer can get away with a lightweight bag, such as a forty pound bag.
A standard leather heavy bag is covered in leather that is similar to motorcycle grade leather; it is very thick. Although the thickness of this leather can vary, is it usually one quarter of an inch. Whether the boxer is using boxing gloves or bag gloves, this thick leather helps it withstand many hits. Lots of athletes use leather boxing bags, but it is a preferred training choice for mixed martial artists too.
Because leather is a natural product a bit of care is needed. For example, most boxing gyms will clean the bag with a leather cleaner once and week and they usually require users to wipe down the bag after use. As needed, a coat of leather conditioner will be added to make sure the leather stays supple and does not become brittle. It might look impressive in the movies, but a boxer doesn’t want a brittle boxing bag that shatters with a strong punch.
For boxers, a heavy bag helps build coordination and stamina. The right size is necessary because this prevents the bag from swaying too much when it is punched by the boxer. When the wrong size is bought, the bag sways too much and it is hard to deliver hits. Also, a bag that is too heavy can result in pain and injury.
The other consideration is how to properly hang a heavy bag. Leather bags can usually work with different types of mounting systems. For example, boxing centers tend to use either wall mounts or ceiling mounts. When these mounting systems are not an option, a heavy bag stand can be used.
