Would a converter box and a digital antenna give my HDTV better reception if I don't have cable?

To be more specific, I own a Sony Bravia 46" LCD 1080p 120Hz HDTV. I recently purchased a RCA Digital Flat Indoor Antenna hoping to get clear reception on most channels. I only got 2 channels to work. My brother has a CRT TV and just purchased a converter box. Now all of his channels look great! Would that work on my HDTV? By the way, I know that HDTV's have built in converters, but why does my brother's older TV look better?

No. Since your HDTV is 120Hz, I assume it's pretty new and should have a modern ATSC tuner. If your Sony were more than a couple of years old I would suggest trying a Channel Master converter and seeing if it picked up more stations. .

The digital tuners in some of the better converter boxes are just as good as the new high end HDTVs but not better.

You probably need a better antenna, but the idea that there are "digital" or "HD" antennas is just marketing hype. The words "digital" or "HD" on a box are useless for choosing an antenna.

First thing, indoor antennas are very sensitive to location. Get a length of coax cable (say ~12') and try various locations and orientations. If you have an old "analog" antenna, give it a try too.

If that doesn't do the trick, you need a better antenna. To make a rational choice, you need to consider details like the frequency bands that your local TV transmitters use and the distance to your local TV transmitters.
