How long do LCD computer monitors last?

I have a five year old 17" flat panel, seems to have gotten a bit dim. I am thinking about upgrading to a 20" widescreen. Does the wider screen just make the image bigger, or does it keep you from having to scroll over as much?

Both a bigger image and keeping you from having to scroll as much.

And LCD monitors will last until the backlight burns out.
