Apple Mac Versus PC: What's Better About Macs?
You already have seen the two abbreviations: PC ( Personal Computer System) and Mac ( Macintosh), both of which are categories of home computer which have been around since the 1980s. The PC was introduced by Xerox and popularized by Bill Gates when he invented Windows, whilst the Mac computer was introduced by Apple. In fact, it was the Apple computer that first had the desktop computer with icons - it came to Microsoft Windows much later.
Comparing both kinds of computer is a bit like comparing two totally different properties: despite the fact that they are both made from the same building blocks and enable you to execute the same tasks ( such as sleep in a bedroom; prepare a meal in a kitchen) each one has a unique design and style and, as a result, price tag.
Desktops
Desktops and laptops are manufactured from basic parts, developed by a wide range of companies. For this reason you will see lots of different companies around: Compaq, H.P., ASUS, Dell, etc.
There are plenty of manufacturers for internal PC parts too, therefore it is easy to find reasonably priced replacement parts if anything breaks or perhaps you just want to upgrade, or improve, a certain feature.
The main operating-system - the piece of master software applications which runs the PC -- for Desktops and laptops is Microsoft Windows, created by Microsoft. You'll see several versions of Windows depending on what Computer or laptop you're using, e.g. Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP.
Some Computers run Linux instead of Microsoft windows. Eventhough Linux is becoming more readily available, it isn't as well recognized as Windows, both with regards to the number of stores that support it, as well as in the number of well-known software programs that's available.
PCs are the most popular option for a home computer, and there are lots of manufacturers to choose from. Make sure to look around to find out who has a good reputation.
Macs
As opposed to PCs which are manufactured by a number of different companies, Macintosh is manufactured and sold by a single company - Apple. Therefore, Apple computers can be more expensive to buy than PCs, since there's not such a large supply of different component producers. Having said that, because Apple inc is more in control of its manufacturing process, you will find less issues with compatibility, and this suggests that Macs are not as likely to have hardware conflicts.
The operating-system for Apple computers is referred to as Mac OS (Macintosh Operating System), which again, is created by Apple inc and only available for use on Apple Macs.
Other motives Macintosh customers give for why you should get a Mac instead of a desktop computer:
- Mac applications are much more user-friendly, faster to understand and less difficult to use than its Windows counterparts
- A Mac needs much less configuration. It "just works"
- Macs are less likely to get computer viruses (although it is still recommended to get anti-virus software, just in case)
- Macs are better able to take care of multi-media without having to get professional hardware or software program
Somewhere around one tenth of home computers currently bought are Macs, but most Mac users are fans and claim that they would never again consider getting a PC. Many Mac users claim that although it's a more expensive initial cost, the lifetime cost of a Mac is less than a PC as they break far less often!
