Hooking up laptop to LCD TV to watch video?

I've hooked up my LCD TV to my pc and when I was trying to do this with my friends laptop to the same tv I had some issues. I can get video to appear on the tv but it cuts off on the sides. When I do it with my pc there's no problems. I've updated my friends video card drivers so there shouldn't be any issues there. His laptop is brand new and made for gaming so it definitely meets the requirements to watch HD video. The only thing I could think of is that Windows 7 Home Premium has an issue with it.

I can make the tv the main monitor but it still cuts everything off even though it recognizes it at the correct resolution. When I try making his laptop the main and the TV as the extension for video I have the same issue with it cutting off. Any suggestions on what I can do?
@steve the tv is made for US/Canada but it has a 120hz refresh since its a newer model. Some Lcds are 240hz now but your answer doesn't really help me with my issue since I'm not having a problem with the refesh.

Adjust the screen resolution for the LCD in Windows. 1920 X 1080 if it is an HD LCD TV, or 1280 X 720 if it is an older LCD.
