Details to Compare when Picking Out a New Monitor
The way Americans receive their news and entertainment is rapidly changing due to the internet. Newspapers are failing and internet news sites are on the rise. But perhaps the single most surprising change is the fact that many of these sites rely on video rather than text. In fact, the largest video sharing site receives well over one billion hits per day. YouTube is currently the third most visited address on the internet, after Google and Facebook.
What does it tell us? For one thing, it tells us that people love watching videos online. Not only do they watch videos on video sharing sites like YouTube and Metacafe, but they also watch them on social networking and news sites like Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has long been one of the most reliable online record keepers and they estimate that 41 million members watch their videos each month.
Add to that the millions of internet users who watch videos on new sites, sports sites, music video sites, and special interest sites and we have a clear and irrefutable trend toward video on the internet. Huge video rental sites like Netflix even allow members to watch full movies with the instant viewing options and iTune lets users download and watch movies on their computers as well. Most television network also let guests watch full episodes of recent shows online. So, we're not just talking about thirty-second video clips here.
As you might expect, the change in the way people get their media has had a dramatic effect on computer technology, specifically with regard to the computer monitor. People now expect their computers to have every bit as sharp and clear a picture as their television sets. In the new few paragraphs we will review a few simple tips that will help you choose the right computer monitor.
Picture
There are two basic types of popular computer monitors—CRTs and LCDs. CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube and they operate on the same technology as a traditional television sets. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display and it is the same flat panel technology that is used in most laptops. Which should you choose?
Flat panel monitors are the newer technology and they superior in many ways with the obvious exception of price. If price is a primary concern, shoppers can save a few dollars on a CRT monitor. But we would strongly advise them against it. LCD sets not only offer a better picture, but they are also lighter and take up less space. And because they have been around for a few years now, their prices get cheaper and more competitive each season.
Size
One of the most obvious advantages of the LCD monitor is its size. Because an LCD set is measured differently than a CRT set, even a medium-size monitor will give the user a larger screen than a big CRT monitor. For example, a 14.5" LCD monitor is as large as a huge 17" CRT monitor. Not to mention the fact that a CRT monitor that size would probably take up about half your desk.
Resolution
Much like a television set, the revolution of a computer monitor is measure in the number of pixels that are displayed both vertically and horizontally. It is important to note that many high-end LCD sets will offer resolutions that you will probably never use because most websites do show videos in those resolutions. For example, the most expensive monitors offer resolutions of up to 1,600 x 1,200. But the most popular resolution that is used online is 1,024 x 768. Therefore, it is often a waste of money to purchase monitors with extremely high resolutions because you simply will not see the difference.
Display Angle
The one obvious advantage a CRT monitor has over an LCD is that it can be viewed from more angles. As a general rule, an LCD monitor can only be viewed straight on. If you are seated to either size, you may not be able to see the monitor. Of course, this is normally only an issue if you intend to use your computer monitor in place of a television set. In that case, watching a movie with a few friends may be difficult because some of them may not be able to see.
Backlight
LCD technology relies on something called a back light, which must pass through filters, crystals, and other layers before it can be emitted as light on the screen. But because the light must pass through all these layers, LCD screens are not normally as bright as CRT monitors. But they do work extremely well in the dark where their superior resolutions can truly be appreciated.
Flat Display
Many CRT monitor are marketed as flat panel sets these days in a desperate attempt to recoup some of the LCD market share. But because of the technology, they can never be truly flat. These sets are generally cured in some way to allow the cathode ray tube to properly fit. In short, they still take up much more space than the standard flat screen monitor.
