What do you think of this variation of Scrabble?
Actually, I am usually one who likes to strictly abide by the rules of a game, but I have added one "rule" to the wonderful game of Scrabble:
When a person finds themselves holding 7 vowels on their rack -- all natural, no blanks and no "Y"s -- she can (on her turn) choose to show her opponent her vowel filled rack and then be allowed to make a free exchange of up to 7 letters. In this situation, the person who changes their vowels off, will not lose a turn. In other words: A free change when inundated with vowels. A "blank" or a "Y" (which can be a consonant) doesn't qualify as a vowel. What do you think of this added rule? I have used it for over 30 years and everyone I play with loves it.
The incidence of having all vowels on your rack occurs more often than you might think. There is a good combinatorial math problem for someone. I'd guess it occurs at least once in every several matches. Yes "home rules" are the spice of any board game.
Since I am a tournament Scrabble player with a chronic case of "vowelitis" (drawing too many vowels) I love it!
Mmm... I wonder if I can get it added to the official tournament rulebook?
