Age of Empires II - how do I connect XP and ME computers with a serial cable?
I can not get either machine to find the other.
Do I need to configure something before trying to make a connection with AEII?
Now I am a network engineer. A highly paid network engineer. And to be honest, I'll be damned if I can explain why this works... but here is the answer.
For some idiot reason I simply can't get it to work over a LAN either (I assume by serial you mean Ethernet), but I found if you install Hamachi VPN software on both and connect to the same VPN, it magically works. It's not an issue with firewalls, I think it's something broken in the game programming itself.
Anyway, after you have installed Hamachi on both computers, go to:
- Control Panel
- Advanced -> Advanced Settings (all in the toolbar)
- You should see a screen with two squared off areas in it. In the top one (labelled "Connections" i believe) you need to highlight the one that says "Hamachi" and use the arrows on the right to bring it to the top of the list. This step is necessary because Age of Empires 2 only recognizes the first adapter in this list.
- Now start Age of Empires. When you start a multiplayer game and hit "check my IP" or whatever it's called, you should see an IP address in the range 5.x.x.x (where x is any number).
Again, no idea why it works. I've spent a stupid amount of time looking at it, and I'm pretty sure the program is just old and broken. Enjoy!
