Do 16:9 tv's get black bars when viewing widescreen movies sometimes?
Some widescreen movies seem to be different shapes. For example "300" and "Anchorman" on DVD are both widescreen, but 300 is a much 'thinner' rectangle shape.
If I get a 16:9 tv, will ALL widescreen content fill up the full screen, or will some (like for example 300, with a thinner image) still have black bars on the top and bottom?
Some DVDs are made to show the picture exactly as it was filmed. these are referred to as anamorphic.
The problems arise because films are often made in aspect ratios that are wider than 16:9. So if you're going to show the picture exactly as made, the screen will be full, in width, but there will be bars above and below the picture.
Alternatively. There are DVDs that are made in 16:9 aspect ratio. This is done by cutting off the sides of the picture. Sometimes they will make them by "scanning" back and forth so that the important stuff doesn't get cut off.
If you read the case of the DVD, you can find out what kind it is.
You can often find both versions of a particular movie.
I prefer the movie the way it was made, black bands and all.
The worst thing to do is to use one of the zoom modes which defeats the whole purpose of the anamorphic DVD and either cuts off the sides or totally distorts the picture.
